How had I not heard of this author until now? This was an incredible debut; a spooky ghost story set during the Spanish Influenza outbreak and WWI. Its excellent worldbuilding weaves the spiritualist craze and fear of disease and death into an emotional, high-stakes tale that touches on romance, jus...
I just finished this book this morning and found it a spectacular Halloween read. Such a good balance of suspense and the historical setting aids the creepy atmosphere immensely. Will be reading more from this author in the future!
I don't like post-20th century paranormal books because they are such trite renditions on what could be a truly terrifying genre. I am prejudiced against first-person stories that remind me of the rise of Mary Sue/self-inserts a la Fanfiction.net, circa 1998. An immediate lustful encounter with ...
This book put me through an emotional ringer. I loved every bit of it. I've be interested in the time period and the forgotten Pandemic of 1918 for sometime now, and curious in how Cat Winters would show this in her work. She nailed it. Down to the small details of how people reacted to those seem...
This was an amazing read. I must be truthful and say that I knew nothing about the era this book is written during but find myself totally interested in learning more about it now. Cat Winters did an excellent job in making the characters and community feel real. I could really sense the feelin...
It took me a long time to pick up In the Shadow of Blackbirds, despite its positive buzz. Two things made me leery. For one, I found its blurb to be unhelpfully vague. Even the interior cover flap was useless — just six, cryptic sentences in 20 point type. Hate those. Only Harry Potter and the De...
A tremendous book that's complex without being unwieldy. The historical details contribute to the sense that anything in this book can happen (an does). The fantastic main character, Mary, has great interactions with her aunt lending greater satisfaction to the emotional turmoil. Check this one out!
I really was looking forward to the book. Photographs (old ones), a great story. Was everything there as I had hoped? Yes, and even more than that!Though ok, I expected more photographs. But story? The plot? The characters? They were all great.I really loved our main character. She was sweet, determ...
This was exactly the kind of book I would normally dislike, but for some reason I loved it. I think it was the setting, America in 1918, just weeks before World War I ended, in the height of fear and flu. I have always been fascinated by Spiritualism and things such as the Cottingsley fairies, and...
