If someone had simply sat me down and told me what this book was about and the characters it contained, I would have expected to like it. As it was, I was not disappointed. Even though I knew what was coming in the end, it was still heart-wrenching to read, because Alvarez did such a fantastic job o...

This book was selected as the Big Read for Montclair, NJ. It is a fictionalized history of the Mirabal sisters who fought against the regime of dictator Trujillo of the Dominican Republic. Three of the sisters were waylaid on a highway and brutally killed by Trujillo's henchmen. Dede was not present...

In her Postscript, Alvarez wrote that she wanted the book to "immerse my readers in an epoch in the life of the Dominican Republic." I think she succeeded magnificently. If that is what you are looking for please see the book description above. I have learned how it might have be...

Another Julia Alvarez book that I had to read for highschool. This one was very enjoyable though. It took certain liberties with what actually happened with the Mirabal sisters, however this didn't take away from the book. Exquisitely narrated. It was an entertaining and heartwrenching read.

This is a fictionalized account of the lives of the four Mirabal sisters, Patria, Dede, Minerva, and Maria Teresa. They grew up in the Dominican Republic during the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. Trujillo ruled brutally for thirty-one years, merciless and drunk on power. It disgusts me how these ...
