This is a magical piece of historical-fiction. This is the story of Estrella, a normal-in-every-way Spanish teenager in the 1500's. Her world shatters quite suddenly when the inquisition starts, and she learns that she is a Marrano- She comes from a family of Jews who converted to Christianity and p...

Incantation is a quick read about the Spanish Inquisition in Spain. I enjoy and dislike reading books like this. I enjoy the history that is told in the book, the characters and how they overcome such horrible times. I dislike the evil of the people in charge. When I read about how they tortured and...

So I wasn't convinced this was the Spanish Inquisition. I mean, clearly, that is when it is supposed to be set, but something about the language and the freedom enjoyed by Estrella and Catalina just didn't feel like 1500s to me. Not something I would've normally read, but I really liked it. I read it for the book club at my school, and I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. It was very heartfelt and beautifully written, the characters were well developed and it was cool to learn about the history back then.

Alice Hoffman weaves her story magic once again. This is the tale of a young girl who believes in the love of her family and must risk everything to protect their beliefs. A story everyone should read.

I picked this up at the school book sale, and am finally getting around to it. I know nothing about the period of the Inquisition in Spain that I didn't learn from In the Garden of Iden, but I am filled with trepidation.***Well handled. Maybe books about the Inquisition shouldn't be hopeful, but I t...

Estrella de Madrigal is not who she thought she was, and neither is her family: they are Marranos ("pigs"), crypto-Jews, in hiding from the Inquisition in the town where they've lived for five hundred years. Her true name is Esther, after the queen who also had to hide who she was.I stopped picking...
