This is my favourite Culture novel...probably because it has the least amount of the Culture in it. This is very much a Culture novel--it's just the backside of the tapestry Banks has woven in the other books. What happens when the objects of a first contact are unaware that it is a first contact? Meticulously composed and emotionally engrossing.
