J. Mark Souther was born in Gainesville, Georgia, in 1971 and lives in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. After completing his B.A. at Furman University, he studied at the University of Richmond (M.A.) and Tulane University (Ph.D.). He is an Associate Professor of History and Co-Director of the Center for Public History + Digital Humanities at Cleveland State University. His first book, "New Orleans on Parade," won the Kemper and Leila Williams Prize in Louisiana History and the Gulf South History Book Award. He writes about the history of cities and tourism and is currently at work on a new book on perceptions of decline in Cleveland.
