About James Stark and the book “The Band Crime, Punk77 Revisited” Pioneering urban artist/photographer James Stark aquired a love for the gritty street approach to photography while living in New York City in the late 1960s When Punk happen James was ready, his gritty approach to photography put him at the front of the San Francisco punk scene.When the band Crime was looking for someone to capture their in-your-face music and stage appearance Stark was the person with the goods. Music magazines were running photos of the band before they ever preformed because of Stark’s ability to present something new in his unique way of taking photographs. People were aware that the music scene was changing but few knew what the future was to bringWhen Stark hooked up with the band Crime in late 1976 and they began their assault on the rock n’ roll status quo. With Stark’s raw street photography and Crimes in-your-face music San Francisco became the West Coast driving force in Punk. His images are recorded in his book Punk77 and can also be found in several books about punk. His Crime posters have been published “Street Art”, “Art of Rock” and “F**ked up and Photocopied” along with an appearance in the documterary film “American Artifacts”. His posters have become classics and highly prized collectors items. “The Crime Book, Punk77 Revisited” has been published by Last Gasp and is available.
