One of the most beautifully written books I've ever disliked. And let's be clear - my 3 stars is my attempt at objectivity, because it is a beautifully written book, and I did dislike it. A lot. From the first sentence there's no doubt this story is dripping with dark, forbidding, gothic atmosph...

DuMaurier is not kind to women in any of her works. She doesn’t include many, and the are for the most part a very passive bunch. Despite knowing that, this year I’ve devoted my All Hallows horror reads to Gothic, and this is very, very Gothic. There’s lots of blood and horror, people who are not w...

Because the one that du Maurier wrote sucks biomechanical donkey dicks. I think I am bringing up the rear on this buddy read, so I'm going to be spoilery - although I will use spoiler tags, in case MBD's book ever shows up! So, to begin with a hyperbolic statement. Daphne du Maurier apparently ...

Please note that I gave this book half a star, but rounded it up to 1 star on Goodreads. This book irked the life out of me. I don't know if I can even begin to count the ways that pretty much every character you come across, even the bad guy, were the dumbest human beings that apparently ever lived....

(Time of Armageddon: Next Saturday. Place: Tadfield, Oxfordshire.)...

I have to admit that DuMaurier really knows how to create a dark, gothic atmosphere. But other than that I have been disappointed in this novel. The slow moving plot is predictable and the final conclusion and the motives of certain characters rather ridiculous. Most of the characters are one-dimens...

Mary complied with her dying mother's wishes that she move in with her Aunt Patience. Little did Mary's mother know what that wish held for Mary. Those wishes turned out to be very unpleasant for Mary. Mary had to endure her uncle's horribly mean disposition, his illegal activities, his mistreatm...

Maybe 2.5, because I like DM's writing. That is the reason why the story wasn't boring. But honestly I did not care about the characters nor the mystery. It was too dark. I don't understand the love Mary had for Jem, a dirty, rascal, untrustworthy guy, who resembled too much to his criminal brother....
