The oldest written Sumerian story tells of the youth of Lugalbanda, father of the famous Gilgamesh. Lugalbanda was the youngest son of Enmerkar, who drained the marshes to build the city of Uruk (according to myth, at the direction of the goddess Inanna). Wanting to make Inanna's city the most beaut...

A little girl ghost(?) visits children bringing them fantastical dreams(?) or adventures. It's not entirely clear what is going on, or why, or whether the experiences and visiting creatures are real or not. **Note: This is a secular review.I really like that Ray used the text from the King James version of the Bible so that I could discuss Biblical translations with my daughter. I am a long-time Jane Ray fan, so of course, I like like her version of the The Twelve Days of Christmas. The text is strictly the song lyrics. The beauty of Ray's illustrations are in her color palette, the delicate details, and the imaginative setting. Add this to your Christmas book collection.

I really wasn't sure about this book until the very, very end. I kept fearing it was going to turn into some silly message story about being considerate and keeping your room clean. Thank goodness it's much more charming and subtle than that. Highly recommended!
