Kaya has a new horse named Steps High. The horse is so beautiful and she can't help, but boast. One day, her boasting puts her and High Steps in danger. It was a nice book and I think it is a good way to get children interested in learning about the Nez Perce. Really nice illustrations too.
Read late 1990'sKisten was of Nordic descent and her family came as pioneers to Minnesota. Ok.
Read in year of publicationI quite liked Kaya. She had genuine strength as well as flaws. A decent portrayal of Native Americaqn culture - neither too romanticized nor too biased against the settlers. Worth a read. Ages 8 +
