Janet H. Murray is an internationally recognized interaction designer and Ivan Allen College Dean's Professor in Literature, Communication, and Culture at Georgia Tech, where she founded one of the world's first PhDs in Digital Media and directs the eTV Lab, a research group that creates prototypes of advanced digital storytelling environments. Murray's widely read 1997 book, "Hamlet on the Holodeck: The Future of Narrative in Cyberspace," has been inspirational to a generation of digital innovators worldwide and is still ahead of its time in imagining the creative possibilities at the convergence of computation and storytelling. The book grew out of Murray's work at MIT in the 1980s and 1990s as the director of digital humanities projects that explored storytelling with artificial intelligence and interactive video, and as a Harvard-trained literature scholar teaching the world's first course in interactive narrative to MIT undergrads and graduate students. In 1999 Murray left MIT for Georgia Tech, where she led the redesign of the graduate program in digital media, initiating humanities-oriented courses in interaction design, game design, and interactive narrative, and fostering sustained project studios as the basis for students' hands-on design training. Murray's latest book "Inventing the Medium: Principles of Interaction Design as a Cultural Practice" is based on her teaching and research at Georgia Tech, and on her observations over the past 10 years of digital media design teams in Atlanta, Hollywood, New York, and Silicon Valley. It is aimed at accelerating the collective process of creating more expressive and coherent digital artifacts by offering diversely skilled design teams a common vocabulary and clear design goals for judging what works on any digital platform. In 2010 the UK's prestigious Prospect Magazine named Janet H. Murray one of the worldwide "Top 10 Brains for the Digital Future."
