Jaroslav Folda (1940 - ) was born in Baltimore, moved to Schofield Barracks at age 6 months, and after Pearl Harbor moved back to Maryland with his mother, while his dad fought in the Pacific with the 25th division. Growing up he lived in Washington, D.C., Goeppingen Germany, and Paris France. After college (Princeton ’62) and graduate school (Johns Hopkins, Ph.D. ’68), he traveled widely in Europe and the Near East doing research on the Art of the Crusaders in the Holy Land. From 1968 to 2008 he taught art history at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. In 1956 he won a Horace Harvey award for history, and in 1999 he won the Charles Homer Haskins medal for his book, The Art of the Crusaders in the Holy Land, 1098-1187.
