Jeanne Lemkau is a clinical psychologist and writer who lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She divides her time between her psychotherapy practice, writing, and travel and activism on behalf of more enlightened U.S.-Cuba policy. She has been interested in Latin America since serving in the Peace Corps in Nicaragua in the early 70s. Subsequently, as a faculty member in family medicine and community health at Wright State University, she developed curricula in global health, led medical delegations to Nicaragua, and studied and taught about health care in Cuba. Since 2000 she has traveled to Cuba twelve times on research, educational, and humanitarian trips, and has lead health delegations to Venezuela and Cuba.In her academic life, she published widely on psychotherapy, cultural issues, and family medicine. Since completing an MFA in creative non-fiction and leaving academe, she has shifted her writing focus to personal memoir and nonfiction about health, human rights, and Cuba. In 2006, she organized and was the primary writer for Love, Loss, and Longing: The Impact of U.S. Travel Policy on Cuban-American Families, an exhibit in photographs and words that toured nationally for two years and was subsequently published by the Latin America Working Group and the Washington Office on Latin America. Her book Lost and Found in Cuba: A tale of midlife rebellion is her personal account of living in Cuba for four months in 2001 and 2002.
