I wish I could say a career in horticulture was in my original master plan, but it didn't pop onto my radar until I was frantically flipping through the massive Ohio State University course catalog, looking to UN-declare accounting as my major. A few weeks into my first horticulture class, I was hooked.Fast-forward 20 years, and here I am, a former editor of Fine Gardening magazine and co-author and lead photographer of The Nonstop Garden (2010, Timber Press). Having also worked in nursery production, at retail garden centers, and as a horticulture manager, specializing in perennial and container gardens, I got lots of dirt under my fingernails before taking the leap into communications.Today, I work as the communications manager for a non-profit conservation organization, the Connecticut Forest & Park Association, and as a freelance gardening communicator. It is true what they say about hindsight being 20-20. I should have seen my love of plants coming from a mile away, from the moment I plucked my first big, red tomato from my grandmother's garden to the times I eagerly followed behind my father through the woods as he explained the value of timber trees. Gardening and me, it was meant to be.
