This is an absolutely powerful, heartbreaking and intense book but it is an easy read. Definitely want to read the sequel Still Waters!

I liked the narrative style better in this memoir than in Blackbird, but I did not love this book. The first few chapters were a satisfying conclusion to Blackbird, but the second half of the book was unfocused and little was revealed. Lauck has an amazing story to tell about five or six years of her life, starting when she was age 5 and her mother's health went from bad to worse. The story was gripping, and I couldn't put it down.I did struggle with the author's voice, especially in the first part of the book where she is writing...

I don't have children, but I enjoyed these essays nonetheless. Some very interesting perspectives from a variety of women on raising girls in our modern world, and trying to find the balance between girliness and feminism.
