Jennifer Rogers Spinola's first book, "Southern Fried Sushi," was a 2011 Christy Award finalist. She has published several more full-length novels and novellas, both contemporary and historical, and co-authored a non-fiction book about God's work in the storms of life.Jenny, after growing up on collard greens and sweet tea, spent nearly ten years overseas--eight years in Brazil and two in Japan--and her Brazilian husband and kiddos never know what's going to be on the table for dinner. (Black beans and rice? Miso shiro? Fried bananas, or fried squid, or fried pork rinds?) And given her love for Southern food, in life and in writing, there's almost certainly something fried lurking in there somewhere. To find out more about Jenny's novels (and browse some Southern-fried recipes), find Jenny at www.jenniferrogerspinola.blogspot.com.

The book is written in the first person, which may put some readers off. However, I would encourage those people to give it a try – they will be pleasantly surprised. Shiloh, the narrator, is an award-winning journalist who grew up in New York and who is now working for Associated Press in Tokyo a...
