This is one of those "It's not the book, it's me" times. This is a well-written book with beautifully atmospheric prose, and I would by no means try to persuade people not to read it (unless you dislike religious fiction or are triggered by suicide, child abuse, spousal abuse, animal abuse, or rape-...

I've been hearing great things about this book and was hoping it would live up to my expectations. And it did.The characters in this story were real, and fully-fleshed out, making the story interesting and horrifying. The funny thing is, despite the fact that there is a terrifying, disgusting man wh...

I loved this book. I wanted to curl up on the family's front porch swing and never leave.

The Homecoming of Samuel Lake is the kind of book that will stay with me a long time. The characters are so realistic and likable that I had to stop reading the book before bed because when bad things happened to the characters it upset me so much that I couldn't sleep. Not many books are this power...

Samuel Lake moves home with his family and all kinds of ruckus is stirred up. His father commits suicide and his daughter befriends a neighbor boy with a cruel dad and his old girlfriend tries to get back into his life (all of which occurs in the first few chapters, so I’m not offering spoilers here...

This book was ok for me. I was actually kind of bored by it and found myself waiting for it to pick it, which it never really did for me. As a result, I kept pushing it to the side for other books which I found more enjoyable until I finally forced myself to finish it today.

Originally published at my blog Chasing Empty PavementsThe Good: There is so much going RIGHT in this novel, I don't even know where to start. Perhaps the setting is where I will begin. As I've mentioned numerous times before, I love novels set in the south. This particular novel is set in Arkansas ...

I've been having a great reading summer; book after book just steals my breath away. From the first line of this novel, I had a strong sense of what to expect -- small town drama, a quirky family, a girl growing into a young adult -- and I found all of that in Wingfield's solid debut. The plot is sim...
