4.5 starsThe Purity Myth is a fantastic summary regarding the virgin/whore dichotomy which takes place in the United States. From purity balls where young girls to teenagers pledge their virginities to their fathers (because we all know we can't be trusted to be in charge of our OWN bodies!) to vict...
Interesting, and compelling stuff, but more than a little hampered by the author's judgemental attuitude at times. It's truly scary how much misinformation is being pushed on kids in "their best interests."
This book pissed me off at some parts, not at the writer, but at the subject matter and the injustice of it all. Definitly highly recommend this.
Very interesting read. The author puts forward the argument that defining women and labeling their morality by their sexual activity and choices is problematic. Valenti argues that overvaluing virginity is on the same continuum and spectrum as labeling women “sluts”. In the end, Valenti is not pr...
Some quick observations:The virginity movement seems to be a problem, but it's a problem focused solely on white middle and upper-middle class women.Purity balls really are messed-up.Money are squandered on useless things (surprise, surprise).Valenti gets that changing attitudes is necessary for a b...
Also appears on The YA Kitten! The Purity Myth has been on my to-read list for a while now due to good word about it, my own curiosity about why society slut shames, victim blames, and judges women based on the sex they are or are not having. It took me a while to read, but I finally did it! It's pre...
This book was terrifying. Sometimes I'm surprised by the crazy stuff that happens in this country. Sure, I knew abstinence-only education existed, but this book really shed the proper light on its harmful effects. It goes beyond the virginity movement and purity balls to religious and federal organi...
A very good book. Many of the things in this book, I already knew about. There were; however, many things that I either didn't know about or hadn't thought about in a feminist and/or purity view. I really like Jessica's writing style, and (unlike others) her inclusion of her own personal life and pe...
This book was great. In the introduction & first couple chapters, I really dug on what Jessica was saying but I was kind of hoping for a more elevated tone...or something. Anyway as the book continued she definitely stepped it up & delivered. I mean she's kind of preaching to the choir with a reader...
