there's some sort of controversy going on right now in the sinosphere, with a millionaire entrepreneur of chinese descent in the US relating some atrocities that occured to her during the Cultural Revolution. this isn't that book. 3/5

The book recounts the experiences of the author from 12-14 under Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution. It's painful to read for all the reasons you might imagine: the constant fear, the temptation to lie and/or betray one's family and friends, the hysteria and violence and cruelty of a witch hunt.
