I have no idea who decided to make this a picture book. It is a perfectly fine short story in McKinley's usual style; i.e. not decipherable by little kids. It was really boring. Yes, it was a fairytale, but the fairy aspect was dull and it just plodded along, without ever really having a point to it as far as the fey connection was concerned.
