JONATHAN LOPEZ's writings on art and history appear frequently in Apollo: The International Magazine of Art and Antiques, published in London and he is a columnist for Art & Antiques. He speaks five languages and traveled to four countries to research Van Meegeren. Lopez is the technical consultant for a feature-length documentary on art forgery and has written articles on Van Meegeren for De Groene Amsterdammer (Holland's oldest weekly magazine). The Man Who Made Vermeers grew out of an article that originally appeared in Dutch in De Groene Amsterdammer. Lopez lives with his wife, an art historian and critic, in Manhattan.

An intriguing story, a compelling if not particularly likeable subject, crisp writing, elegant language and an author who explains details and concepts without talking down to his reader all made this a wonderful reading experience.

Fabulous and engrossing book. Art, Vermeer, Nazis, Kitsch, 'who-done-it'... all rolled into one.
