Josaphat-Robert Large was born in Jérémie (Haiti) on November 15 1942. Forced to leave his country by the Duvalier's dictatorship, he came to New York at the end of 1963. He studied English at Columbia University and Photography at New York Institute of Photography. Novelist and a poet, he writes in French, Haitian creole and English. He is the author of 12 books, 8 in French, 3 in Creole and one in English. In 2003, his novel "Les terres entourées de larmes" (Paris 2002) won the Prix littéraire des Caraïbes (Caribbean literary Prize). Large is a member of l'Association des écrivains de langue francaise (the Association of French writers), La Société des Gens de Lettres de France (the Society of French intellectuals) and of Pen America.
