(Original Review, 2002-06-25)One of my oldest friends, both female and a graduate in English loathes Lessing, and I could just as easily wonder how Nabokov can offer anything superior to Under Western Eyes, The Secret Agent, Nostromo or Victory, which must have one of the most memorable lines in Eng...

There's nothing wrong with a bit of baggy. And certainly there's little or nothing 19th century without that touch of cellulite. And that's mostly where all the masterpieces live. No waste. Strange story, very well told, centred on unfolding the character of the enigmatic Kurtz who remained enigmatic. No particular plot so unsatisfying.

This is Conrad's first book and it sets the stage for what is to follow. The setting, themes, description, characterization and plotting are all archetypal Conrad. It is assured with a very complex structure and one an hardly believe that Conrad came out of the gate both this original and develope...

“Sansho the Steward” by Mori Ogai This is a poignant short story about a brother and sister who are kidnapped and sold into slavery. There’s no way there could be a happy end for both of them. The Golden Slipper, and other problems for Violet Strange by Anna Katherine Green A fun detective nov...
