Joseph Michael Hilbe (b: 30Dec1944 Los Angeles, CA.) Emeritus Professor, Univ. of Hawaii, Adj Prof of Statistics, Arizona State U., and Solar System Ambassador, NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory, CalTech; Hilbe is the founding President of the International Astrostatistics Association; is an Elected Fellow of the American Statistical Assoc, an Elected Fellow of the International Astrostatistics Association, an elected member of the International Statistical Institute, and is a "Full Member" of the American Astronomical Society; Prof. Hilbe is author of seventeen statistics books since 2001, including "Modeling Count Data, "Negative Binomial Regression", "Practical Guide to Logistic Regression", and "Logistic Regression Models", leading texts on the subjects. "Modeling Count Data" won the 2015 PROSE honorable mention award in mathematics, and was the only statistics text to win an award. His books, articles, and software on count models and logistic regression in particular have been extremely influential worldwide. in 2016 Hilbe was presented with the initial "Outstanding Contributions to Astrostatistics" medal by the International Astrostatistics Association, the association's top award. In athletics Hilbe was a lead athletics (Track & Field) competition official at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, was a U.S. team and NCAA Div 1 head track & field coach, won two national track championships, and was a 'world list' sprinter in the 1960s. Hilbe was recognized in 2009 as a Distinguished Alumnus at California State University, Chico, from which he earned a BA degree in philosophy in 1968. Two years earlier he was inducted into the "Chico State" Athletic Hall of Fame, the only graduate of the university to achieve both distinctions. He is also an inductee into the Athletic Halls of Fame of both high schools he attended, Woodside Priory Prep (1958-1961) and Paradise HS (1961-62). He is married with 4 children, 5 grandchildren, and a white Maltese male dog named Sirr, living in Arizona.
