Dr. Joseph Shapira is the president and CEO of Comm&Sens, a strategic consulting company in wireless communications and electromagnetic sensing and imaging. He also holds a Chair Professor position in IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Madras, India. He is credited with 30 patents and patent-filing on cellular systems technology and optimization, coauthor of a book CDMA radio with repeaters (SPRINGER, 2007), and author of chapters in 4 books and over 80 professional journals and symposia papers.During his tenure at Qualcomm (1990 - 94) he took a major part in the development of the CDMA standard, developing the radio engineering for the network. He founded and was president of Qualcomm Israel, engaged in the development of CDMA satellite communications. He then conceived, co-founded, managed and chaired Celletra Ltd. - a smart active antenna solutions company (1997-2003). He also consulted to R&D centers at Motorola, Nortel, Nokia, Uniden, Cellcom, Pelephone, Bezeq and others. Before joining Qualcomm, Dr. Shapira had a long career with RAFAEL, where he held a broad spectrum of research, management and staff positions, including establishment and leadership of the Electromagnetics lab., then the leading lab in antenna systems and dynamic arrays, propagation and RCS, and EMC; then VP operations of the guidance division and then the senior fellow of the organization.Dr. Shapira received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, and obtained a Ph.D. degree in Electrophysics from the Polytechnic Institute of NYU. He was awarded best paper award from IEEE AP-S in 1974 ("Ray analysis of conformal array antennas"), and the Bergman award by the president of Israel in 1980 for developing Electromagnetics in Israel. He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE, and served 6 years as a Vice President of URSI - the International Union for Radio Sciences. He is a member of Forum 100 - the forum of influential alumni of the Technion - Israel Institute of technology. He is listed in Who'sWho in Science and Engineering, and Who'sWho in the World.The website www.comm-and-sens.com contains recent publications on enhancement and optimization of CDMA and UNTS networks, MIMO, EMC for system engineers.
