Joy H. Selak was raised in San Antonio, Texas and after stops in California, Arizona and San Juan Island WA, returned to her Texas roots in Austin. She is a former university writing instructor and stockbroker, but after becoming chronically ill in her late 30's, Joy could no longer work and turned to writing. The first edition of You Don't LOOK Sick! Living Well with Invisible Chronic Illness was a finalist for USABook News Best Health Book and an IPPY Award in 2005. A fully revised and updated second edition was published by Demos Health in 2012.Joy and her co-author, Dr. Steven Overman, speak to patient groups nationwide about navigating the 4 phases of the illness experience and building a meaningful life that contains long term illness. They believe passionately in improving care for the chronically ill and both are committed to teaching patients to access better care and advocating for patients within the health care system.
