Lexile Level: AD150L This picture book by Kadir Nelson has a great message about kindness and would be wonderful to introduce to students at the beginning of the school year. The book describes how we can plant seeds of selfishness or kindness which will grow into either fruits of trouble or fruit...

This not only balanced the action of a racist regime actively trying to keep minorities down but also the more personal stories: Miles' crush on a poet, and fellow student, named Alicia. (She's black as well, which is only important because one of their teachers is pretty openly and grossly racist...

I'll post a review closer to the pub date, but this was pretty intense. Surprisingly deep look at race for a YA Spider-Man book.

Weatherford does have a very interesting stylized way of writing in three voices: a narrator, Harriet, and God. There is a ...

Nelson took on an ambitious project, and made some fine choices. The cinematic techniques are what strikes me most. As I read I moved back and forth between establishing wide shots, medium range shots, and close-ups. Some of the close ups and wide shots are extreme. The cover and the pages with the ...

Kadir Nelson's beautiful paintings illustrate the high points of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous I have a Dream speech. The combination of words and pictures help convey some of the power of Dr. King's words for an audience who wasn't alive to hear them originally.
