Karl was born in Armagh,in Northern Ireland, and lives in Dublin. He is a professional actor, with a wide experience of theatre, some film (e.g. A SHINE OF RAINBOWS), and television (he played Tim Carney, a character in the Irish tv soap, FAIR CITY, for 2 years).THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LETTER IN THE WORLD was a story he wrote for his niece, Sheena. It is about a young girl, Poppy, who finds a magic letter in a park one day. It is in a red envelope marked 'To You' and it seems to give comfort and help to everyone who reads it. Karl had Sheena find the story (tucked into a red envelope marked 'To You') in a park in Armagh on Christmas Eve 2005, the day before her 9th birthday.Karl wanted to express to his niece how magical books and reading can be and to encourage her to read more. He approached The O'Brien Press with the story and two years later they published the book and launched it by leaving copies in parks and playgrounds, on trains and buses, in Dublin to encourage reading."The book has such a unique look, with wonderful colour illustrations by the artist Emma Byrne, I was thrilled with how much the publishers took the story to heart. For better or worse, it also encouraged me to write more, and I've had pieces, on radio and elsewhere, that would never have been written but for THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LETTER IN THE WORLD. I get asked to go to schools and libraries to read the book and talk to the kids about writing and acting, and it's such a priviledge for me to be able to do that. Books ARE magical, and that magic never ends!"
