It is not easy for me to write about myself. How would I describe myself. What words resonate with my Life. Well I have been a social worker since 1996. Prior to being a social worker I sold advertising for about 12 years. What is amazing to me is that selling advertising is similar to being a social worker. How you might ask? They require some of the same skills e.g. perception, assessment, being able to read between the lines of what a person says and what they mean. Having a sense of when a person is ready to change. Listening to their story and asking the right questions. The difference is the product. Advertising was an external product. Social work is getting a person to believe in themselves. I see myself as a conduit for change but I do not create the change. I just lead the person to the door. Hoping that they decide to enter. It is difficult to offer a person a new door if you don't understand and believe in the value of what is behind the door. It reminds me of the phrase that "you can't teach what you don't know". The surprise of my life is that you never know who will become your teacher. I have been taught by children, clients, friends, family and enemies. I share many of the lessons that I have learned. I have been asked is this book a "self help" book. If this book helps you discover your own journey and narrative. Then I am pleased. If it reminds you of your life's trials and tribulations and gives you a moment to pause and reflect. Then I am successful. I hope that reading this book is helpful in your journey but I don't hold the key to your very personal narrative. That is for you to discover and enjoy.
