Kathleen S. Lewis was born feet first with the umbilical chord around her neck after her mother had been warned not to try to have children!... miracles!!! Her family lived in Greenville, SC on a farm with horses, cows, etc.. Her dad was out killing hogs the day she was born. She raised & trained her own filly Her dad had built a colonial mansion on a hill on the property, Azure View. Music always was a big part of her celebration of life. As a teenager, she'd sing to the top of her lungs to the stars & the moon from the roof of the porch of the house making up some songs & belting out other well known ones. It was only later that she found out that neighbors would bring out lawn chairs & sit in their yards to listen to her serenades! She graduated from Greenville Sr. HS, Vanderbilt University School of Nursing with a BSN,Georgia State University with an MS in Rehabilitation Counseling with a specialty in LIVING with Chronic Illness, & has taken the core content from the University of Georgia in Marriage & Family Therapy. One evening of her pediatric rotation of her junior year at Vanderbilt when she was on the floor reviewing her charting. The distraught mother of the young boy she'd cared for & given a shot (her first one ever) that morning for extremely high blood pressure begged her to give her son his shot. He was scared to death of the nurse on duty that was to give him the shot & had seizures when she gave him injections.Kathleen called to see if a nursing instructor was available to OK & supervise her. Since she wasn't able to reach an instructor, she called the nursing supervisor on duty to observe her. After giving the shot with no problems, she was threatened with being booted out of nursing school. Kathleen has worked in ICU, med/surg floors, taught nursing, worked with Visiting Nurses Associations in the inner city of Atlanta & Baltimore ... combat zones, has hosted several Internet support chat rooms, and now has a private, nonprofit, phone counseling ministry with people who are struggling to chose life when faced with challenges. She was married to a Baptist minister for 21 years & has 2 fantastic sons & 4 grans! She has been active in many churches teaching SS, singing in the choir, & filling in wherever needed. When systemic lupus sidelined her professional pursuits, she began writing, counseling, & speaking around the country to lay & professional groups. Kathleen has been widely published in lay & professional publications & has found a victory living skill with a concept she calls Breath Prayers. Currently she resides in Atlanta, Ga. with her oldest son, Jamie, & his family.Kathleen enjoys music, singing, going to church, writing, & many other pursuits as her health allows. She believes in celebrating life & success-FULLY LIVING with chronic illness with the guidance of the Holy Spirit by living to the edge of her limits without going over.At different times, she's volunteered with the Lupus Foundation of America, Atlanta Chapter in many capacities, the Arthritis Foundation, & the Association of Rheumatology Heath Professionals (ARHP). At one of the ARHP national meetings in Washington, DC, in conjunction with the American College of Rheumatology, she was asked to help plan & participate in an adaptive fashion show introducing the show with Jane Powell & model 2 outfits. Little did she know her quick changes from a bathing suit & dress in the make shift dressing rooms of the the Shoreham Hotel had small strips of glass that looked like mirrors but were really just glass. They looked out on the main lobby & bar ... her first & last stripping performance! Men started coming to the windows offering water, etc.Kathleen's greatest desire is that the Love of God would flow through her to order her steps to carry her into the future! The difference between managing a chronic illness and LIVING with your condition often comes down to your spiritual & emotional attitude. Doctors will tell you to stay healthy and learn to LIVE with your disease. Trouble is, they rarely tell you how, because they themselves don't know.Kathleen Lewis can help. A former RN diagnosed with lupus in 1978 at age 34, she understands chronic disease management means much more than controlling physical symptoms. You can have a good day physically, but remain incapacitated emotionally and spiritually. Like many doctors, Lewis urges people to learn to LIVE with their condition. Unlike those same doctors, she offers the means to do so.Challenges to LIVING with a Chronic Illness combines Lewis's personal experiences coping with many long-term diseases, as a professional counselor with Marriage & Family core content, Stephen Minister, & chaplain. She offers advice, tips, and strategies to help you navigate the difficult adjustment period after diagnosis, helping you learn to LIVE with, rather than simply survive, your condition.Easy to read but informative, upbeat but realistic, Lewis's book explains the importance of changing from the inside out, rather than the outside in. She offers hope and practical solutions to anyone adjusting to life with a chronic condition.Challenges of LIVING with Chronic Illness... BEGINNINGS & ENDINGKathleen S.
