I've written many science books, but these days I'm mostly writing fiction. There is usually a lot of science in my novels. Perhaps a tad too much--sorry, I try to keep reminding myself not to go overboard. I've got a Ph.D. in neuroscience, and I'm fascinated not only with brain science but also physics and many of the other sciences. But I'm also convinced that there is more to us and our universe than just science. I enjoy speculating about science and technology, but in my opinion a good story is always primarily about people. Politically I've been a lot of different things in my life. I usually adopt whatever political viewpoint is out of favor: I'm a conservative among liberals and a liberal among conservatives. Presently, however, I'm more into libertarianism. And I've always been a peace-lover. I don't belong to the peace-at-any-price crowd, but wars are usually pointless as well as catastrophic. I say this even though I served a tour of duty in the U.S. Air Force, which I joined immediately after I finally graduated high school (after spending five rebellious years at that school, three of which I was stuck in the 9th grade and didn't care). I was something of a pacifist even while I served in the Air Force. In fact, especially when I served in the Air Force.I was born a rebel and I'll die a rebel, I suppose. But I know I don't have all the answers either. When I finally made it out of high school I promised myself I'd never enter another classroom again. After a few years in the Air Force, I decided education wasn't such a bad idea, so when my enlistment was up I went to college. I couldn't immediately get into a big school because of my awful academic record, so I started off at a community college. After switching my major six times, I ended up with a bachelor of science in psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi. I didn't like college and promised myself I'd never go back to school. A year later, though, after doing well on my grad school entrance exam (GRE), I enrolled in the neuroscience Ph.D. program at the University of Pennsylvania. I didn't have much fun. After six years I finally completed my degree requirements, and I promised myself I would never go back to school again. This time I kept my word. But by this time I had run out diplomas....All of my novels are self-published. Like most writers, I tried to interest agents, editors, and publishers in my fiction, but they turned me down. I didn't let them stop me, and I'm hoping you won't allow them to dictate your choices either. Try the Look Inside feature at Amazon.com, see if you like the first page or so of my books. If you buy one of them, review it. Reviews are critical for self-published authors. If you like my book and want me to write more, give me a positive review. If you hate my book and want me to go away, let me assure you that negative reviews can be deadly. You've got the power.I like to read even more than I like to write. You can find hundreds of my book reviews by visiting my web site, kylekirkland.net, and clicking the Book Reviews button.
