L. Diane Barnes is a professor of history at Youngstown State University specializing in nineteenth-century U.S. social history and slavery and abolition. In addition to teaching and research she is associate editor of the Frederick Douglass Papers, and editor in chief of the scholarly journal Ohio History. She also co-edits a monograph series on Law, Society, and Politics for Ohio University Press.
