'I don't mean to bitch, but in the future I intend to hesitate before I do a favour for a friend of a friend. Never have I taken on such a load of grief. At the outset, it all seemed so innocent...'
It was the week before Thanksgiving when Kinsey Millhone first heard the sad story of the late Johnny Lee, the World War II fighter pilot of whom, rather mysteriously, the military authorities have no record. His family are concerned - perhaps Kinsey could make a few calls, straighten things out?
Then Johnny's apartment is ransacked. In the debris a hidden safe is uncovered - and in that safe is a mysterious key marked LAWLESS.
That night Kinsey's on a plane to Dallas, at the start of a thrilling rollercoaster ride through Texas and Kentucky on the trail of a long-buried treasure. Unfortunately there's a fire-raising psychopath on her tail...
And she's going to be late for a very important wedding...

Series: Kinsey Millhone (#12)
Have to say that this one was pretty good though the usual suspects are not in it much (Rosie, Henry, William, etc.). I admit it: I haven't read a Sue Grafton novel since 2012. Why do I know that so clearly? That's when Grafton quite notably referred to indie authors as lazy. The original interview, on LouisvilleKy.com, is no longer available, but various commentaries and quotations from it are on the internet fore...
San Francisco Examiner called this novel one of Kinsey Millhone's "wildest adventures yet." I have to disagree. If I wasn't so invested in this series, I would have stopped reading early on. The mystery of an already deceased person simply did not grab my interest.
In the 12th book of the series, Kinsey tries to do the right thing and helps a friend who wants to find out why the military has no records of one of his veterans friends who served in WWII. This was simple enough, so why is it that a few days later she ended up having a gun pointed at her face? F...
Kinsey gets herself in another weird and interesting situation in L is for Lawless. By trying to help a neighbor, pro-bono, she ends up in a cross-country trip with plenty of danger and mystery. Her landlord Henry asks her to help a neighbor down the street with a little problem of trying to get dea...
