Quali mostri popolano gli incubi di Abraham, il nonno di Jacob, unico sopravvissuto allo sterminio della sua famiglia di ebrei polacchi? Sono la trasfigurazione della ferocia nazista o piuttosto qualcos’altro, qualcosa di vivo, presente e ancora mortalmente pericoloso? Quando una tragedia impossibile lo colpisce, Jacob sa che non può più rimandare: deve scoprire cos’è successo a suo nonno e, soprattutto, cosa ha visto, o crede di aver visto, con i suoi stessi occhi. Non gli resta che attraversare l’oceano e trovare l’inaccessibile orfanotrofio inglese che durante la guerra ospitò Abraham e altri piccoli orfani ebrei. Ma per raggiungere quel luogo avvolto nella leggenda non ha molti indizi, a parte i vecchi racconti del nonno e una sparuta collezione di bizzarri fotomontaggi d’epoca.
