Laura Hartman is Vincent de Paul Professor of Business Ethics and Legal Studies in DePaul University's College of Commerce, where she has received the university's Excellence in Teaching Award, the college's Outstanding Service Award and numerous university competitive research grants. She also serves as Research Director of DePaul's Institute for Business and Professional Ethics. Currently, she represents DePaul University on the Global Projects Committee of the Worldwide Vincentian Family, a committee responsible for hands-on design and implementation of a micro-development, finance and education system for the poor of Haiti. She was named to that effort after recently returning to the faculty, having served for a number of years as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs for the university. She has been invited to serve as the Gourlay Professor at the Melbourne Business School/Trinity College at the University of Melbourne (2007-2008), an invited professor at INSEAD (France), HEC (France), the Universite Paul Cezanne Aix Marseille III, and at the Grenoble Graduate School of Business, among other European universities. On behalf of the accrediting body for schools of business, AACSB, Hartman is the global coordinator of the regular, bi-annual seminar series, "Teaching Business Ethics." As a globally recognized scholar, educator, trainer, service-provider and advisor, Hartman has consulted, guided and taught at multinational for-profits, non-profits and educational institutions in the field of business ethics on issues related to corporate governance, responsibility and culture, the employment relationship, global labor conditions and standards, the impact of technology on employment relationships, and, her particular expertise, the alleviation of global poverty through profitable corporate partnerships. Hartman's practical experience spans over 20 years in both consulting and academia as it relates to legal and corporate risk management, vulnerability assessment, and business ethics. Given the current economic conditions, her expertise is vital and timely in advising corporate executives and the professional community on actions necessary to enhance ethical leadership, to mitigate corporate risks (legal, fraud, financial), to implement a sustainable corporate governance framework, to provide appropriate and effective business ethics training to employees (to meet mandatory legal requirements and to moderate key risks), and to generate morale under exigent circumstances. Hartman has published over 80 books, cases and articles in, among other journals, Business Ethics Quarterly, Business & Society Review, Business Ethics: A European Review, and the Journal of Business Ethics. Her research and consulting efforts have also garnered national media attention by publications such as Fortune Small Business where she was named one of the "Top 10 Minds for Small Business," as well as the Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, and the New York Times. In her professional role working with corporations and other institutions, Hartman has engaged in ethics training workshops and presentations for a number of local and global companies and professional associations at the employee, executive and board levels. In particular, she has worked with firms in industries such as regulated utilities (Nicor, Exelon), healthcare (Blue Cross Blue Shield, Abbott), financial services (Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Fiserv, Investment Management Consultants Association), education operations (University of Texas System, Roosevelt University) and retail/manufacturing (Kerry Foods, Nike). Her ability to design and to translate ethics training appropriate to each of these industries and staff levels is one of her noteworthy strengths. Hartman's efforts on behalf of her clients involve a comprehensive risk analysis of a firm's vulnerabilities from an ethics perspective, where necessary, followed by the development and delivery of programs in the following areas: * Ethics training refresher and a train-the-trainer programs to be conducted for hundreds of stock traders, as mandated by the CFTC (Chicago Mercantile Exchange) * Innovative, unique and cutting edge online training environments designed to be significantly engaging for the worker while challenging from an ethical perspective (throughout)* Workshops for both internal and public auditors with regard to the development of effective oversight for both ethics and compliance operations, with regard to the revised Federal Sentencing Guidelines, in particular (Univ. of Texas System, PricewaterhouseCoopers)* Full day highly-tailored, firm-specific new employee orientation and current employee ethics training modules (Kerry Foods, Fiserv)* Customized leadership development workshops on ethical decision-making (OfficeMax, Exelon)* Presentations and board training sessions on ethics, ethical decision-making and corporate governance at the employee, management and board levels (Blue Cross, ComEd, IMCA)Hartman graduated magna cum laude from Tufts University and received her law degree from the University of Chicago Law School.
