Neatly masterful short story which suffers for the contemporary reader from being too influential. Lovecraft was all over the first person descent into madness narrative like Chthulu on New England port towns, though of course he saw it here first. One of the few times seeing two different versions of a text was a downside to me: The way The Horla was presented in this edition just seemed like showing two different drafts of an interesting but not necessarily ground breaking story (even if it was for it's time).
