A reread of what is possibly my favorite fantasy series by my favorite fantasy author. Eddings has his faults -- over description of the weather, a tendency to write himself into deus ex machina, and some overreliance on racial prejudices which would be truly awful if we weren't talking about fict...
A fun fantasy novel that does a good job of bridging the gap between high fantasy and heroic fantasy. I particularly liked the little nods to Wagner's Ring cycle with the series gemstone. My main complaint is that the gemstone doesn't come up soon enough in the book's plot.
A wonderful fantasy series. I read it for the first time last year, and immediately knew, that this would be a series I'd reread time and time again. I'm a big fan of fantasy, and this is some of the best.
I read many Eddings books when I was 14, and they, together with some other fantasy series, got me into reading. I liked them then, but I think I would probably give them awful ratings today ;)
