Perhaps if one first read this as a child it would be more effective;: it came across as heavy-handed to me. When the other mice are gathering food for winter the titular hero just sits around, but in his season he provides spoken art to warm the hearts of the others. Library copy.
★★★★Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse (Hardcover)by Leo Lionni This is a case of the grass is greener on the other side. A live mouse is jealous of a windup mouse. Wanting to be loved and played with, but then he would be a toy, and not himself.
Wonderful illustrations, and the story of an inchworm who measures things in nature. We use this story just for fun (of course) but also to introduce measuring for our pre-K/K level kids. The few words per 2-page spread make it also idea for the littlest readers just for fun.

★★★★★Frederic by Leo LionniThis is a nice story about 4 mice, preparing for the winter, and one sitting and watching. He gives them excuse after excuse, about why he is not helping. But as it turns out, his preparation, may be just what they need to get though the winter.
I don't think that Swimmy would be particularly memorable if it weren't for the illustrations. They were so fascinating, and it was impossible to not wonder how Lionni created them. Very compelling!
