Lewis R. Gordon is an Afro-Jewish philosopher, social and political activist, critic, and musician (drums and piano). He has lectured across the globe and is active with a variety of international associations and organizations. He teaches in the Department of Philosophy, the Africana Studies Institute, El Instituto, Asian and Asian American Studies, and the Center for Judaic Studies and Jewish Life at the University of Connecticut at Storrs. He also is he European Union Visiting Chair in Philosophy at Université Toulouse Jean Jaurès, France, and the Nelson Mandela Distinguished Visiting Professor at Rhodes University, South Africa. His previous appointments include Professor and the founding chairperson of the Department of Africana Studies at Brown University (1996-2004) and Philosophy and African American Studies at Purdue University (1993-1995). He is a graduate of Yale University (Ph.D., 1993) and Lehman College's Scholars Program (1984). A former high school teacher, he was the founder of The Second Chance Program for In-School Truants at Lehman High School. Professor Gordon also co-edits the book series Global Critical Caribbean Thought for Rowman & Littlefield International in London, UK.
