Li Smith was born in Luxembourg and raised on a farm in South Africa where her family grew many of the foods they ate. Her holistic approach to life was nurtured by her mother who taught her the essentials of growing vegetables and herbs. An artist from her youth, Li began to grow wheatgrass in 1978. She has witnessed many cases of dramatic healing among those consuming wheatgrass juice, including the reversal of high blood pressure, anemia, asthma, and kidney dysfunction. Li has appeared on South African television and in People magazine promoting wheatgrass as a therapeutic superfood.
