I did not realize there was an earlier novel in this series. This is a standalone book. Joseph Coughlin is working on the opposite side of the law than his father who is hoping to become the Police Commissioner in Boston. Joseph is involved in robbery which leads to cops dying. He is arrested and se...
Ok, time for a good story. And Mr. Lehane always delivers. This book follows "The Given Day" (an excellent story) and while I am not a fan of gangster novels (and this most certainly is a gangster novel) Mr. Lehane's pacing and character development is first rate.
So, I bought this thinking it was a mystery, ala Kenzie & Gennaro, but instead it's a straight up novel, set in the late 20s and early 30s. It has the feel of a John Jakes historical family epic. Live By Night follows the life of young gangster (he prefers to think of himself as an outlaw) Joe Co...
Live by Night took me a while to get into, mostly due to the fact that it is kind of a rambling tale. It never turned into a great novel. It's lack of focus held it back from the heights it's finer moments suggested. Still, it won me over eventually.
After the disappointing MOONLIGHT MILE, I approached LIVE BY NIGHT with managed expectations(still need to read THE GIVEN DAY), but was delighted to find it a return to form for Lehane, who has, over the past few years, become one of my favorite writers. Reading NIGHT, it's easy to see why Lehane se...
When we were kids and we used to play cops and robbers it was pretty clear who was supposed to be the good guy and who the bad guy. Of course, real life is seldom that clear and in the Depression-era America of Dennis Lehane's Live By Night the distinction is nearly irrelevant. Cops were cops, but c...
I'm disappointed because this book wasn't as good as I wanted it to be. It is beautifully written, and was a dream to read however it didn't grab me like I wished it would. The Godfather is one of my all time favourite books, the synopsis of this book sounded amazing and I couldn't wait to read it. ...
While not as affecting or as memorable as The Given Day , Dennis Lehane's usual potent writing and attention to detail elevates this sort-of-sequel. Great read.
Let's see ... two facts: 1) Dennis Lehane is one of my favorite authors, and 2) I pretty much stop reading literature-fiction these days. Unfortunately for me, I think that Mr. Lehane moved into lit-fic (a historical no less!) with his novel, The Given Day, four years ago (and yes, I did read that o...
A loose sequel to Lehane's Given Day, this novel takes place seven years later as the country is settled deep in Prohibition. Joe Coughlin, barely an adolescent when we first met him as a bit player in the last book, is now a young man working as a contractor for one of Boston's bootlegging gangster...
