Social history at its best. Clear prose, jam-packed with facts that seem to flow naturally from Peter Ackroyd's familiarity with the subject. A touch of social analysis. Vivid, engaging. Reading it as a sometimes writer of fantasy, I couldn't recommend more the sense of city life through the ages.
