For me, this story didn't really start for me until almost 40%. This is one of those books that you have to keep reading to get the whole thing. Once the pieces fall in place, it is captivating and rich in literature. There were a couple of moments that I wanted to quit. I couldnt figure out where t...

I read this on the flight to South America — and couldn't put it down. S. Zafon's characterizations are rich, and make me thankful I'm not coming of age again! The storyline, while complex, is chock full of surprising twists and turns (depicted realistically). I enjoy the structure of his writing, r...

Couldn't finish it. I don't think I even made it 1/4 of the way through. was turned off by the explicit sexual scenes especially considering the first involved an 11 year old. They felt gratuitous and unnecessary.

What can I say? Thisreally isn't right up my alley, but my mother-in-law highly recommended it and I love that woman, so I gave it a try. I shouldn't have. I liked parts of it - mostly the writing. Zafón has a way with words. He lets them flow, makes them run through you, paints pictures in your ...

I just can't make myself keep reading this. Maybe it's just the mood I'm in but I haven't been this bored while reading a book since I read The Historian. Like The Historian, The Shadow of the Wind is one of those literary fiction books that try to be an exciting mystery, except it keeps getting bog...

The Shadow of the Wind opens in mid-centry Barcelona as Daniel Sempere and his father visit the Cemetery of Forgotten Books. Daniel is allowed to select one book with the condition that he must serve as the book's steward for the rest of his life. He becomes enthralled with the story and the author,...

I very rarely pick up random books to try, but browsing through my university library's leisure collection made me want to take a book out. Just a random book. I'd seen this one everywhere, and people had been raving about it all over this site, so I thought 'Lets give it a go'. All I really knew go...

I have two very big problems with this book:1. Every single woman in this book is a victim of some kind of abuse and none of them are important except as motivation for the male characters.2. The author has included a completely gratuitous rape. It is used as a minor event and does literally nothing...

Captivating! This is the kind of book you read and want to pick up again for the first time. When I see it in the bookstore, I want to buy it again. I have and had to give it away. I already own a copy! But it's just that good. Irresistible.
