Lucy Gray was born in 1955 in Detroit, Michigan. She attended Dartmouth College through a program at the University of New Hampshire Continuing Education from which she earned a Bachelor's Degree in 1979. She has been an award winning Radio Talk Show host, she has written for many magazines including Elle and Interview. She has had short stories published in The Journal of Gastronomy and Narrative Magazine. Her play, To Kill For was produced in 2008 and her short fiction film, Genevieve Goes Boating was on Film Threats Top Ten list for 2012. She has won various awards for her photography since 1998. In 2013 Gray's art photography illustrated an Arion Press edition of the classic American novel, "The Day of the Locust" by Nathanael West. In 2014 her book, "Balancing Acts: Three Prima Ballerinas Becoming Mothers" with a foreword by Hilton Als is coming out in March. She has been photographing these extraordinary and accomplished women, and their families since 1999. She was with her camera in the hospital when the dancers gave birth, and in the rehearsal room as they got back in shape, and then backstage when they performed again even better than they had before giving birth. The prima ballerinas, Kristin Long, Tina LeBlanc and Katita Waldo danced for San Francisco Ballet in the period when the company grew to be one of the best in the world under the Artistic Direction of Helgi Tomasson.
