Dr. Lucy H. Spelman is a veterinarian board-certified in zoological medicine--one of 150 in the world. Her patients have included giant pandas in China, Asian elephants in Burma, giant river otters in Guyana, and mountain gorillas in Rwanda. She is also a writer and educator with a keen interest in exploring new ways to use the arts to communicate and interpret science. In 2008, she published her first work of creative nonfiction," The Rhino with Glue-on Shoes," a collection of 28 short stories; her contribution gives the book its name. In October 2012, she published her second book in collaboration with National Geographic Children's Book Division, a new edition of "The National Geographic Animal Encyclopedia."Currently, Lucy is the Exotics specialist at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists in East Greenwich, RI, and part-time faculty at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), a unique position that allows her to collaborate with artists and designers. She teaches three courses: the Biology of Human-Animal Interactions, Evolutionary Biology and the Art of Communicating Science. Her research interest is in the area of one-health medicine, an emerging field of study that examines the interactions between animal, human and environmental health.In addition, she is a course developer and instructor for the Rhode Island Technology Enhanced Sciences (RITES) program. She serves on two non-profit boards: the Karanambu Trust in Guyana, South America (since 2009), and the Wildlife Rehabilitators Association of Rhode Island (since 2013.) Lucy's passion for science education and outreach stems from her prior work experience which includes zoo administration, media consulting, and writing. She is an accomplished public speaker and has been the subject of various news interviews and television documentaries. Lucy grew up in West Redding, CT. She earned her bachelor's degree in biology from Brown University (1985), and her veterinary degree from the University of California at Davis (1990.) She then completed a one-year in internship in small animal medicine at Ettinger and Associates in Los Angeles, CA, and a three-year residency in Zoological Medicine at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. In 1994, she received her board certification from the American College of Zoological Medicine. She worked for the Smithsonian Institution 's National Zoo (1995-2004), first as Associate Veterinarian, and then as its first female Director. She was a media consultant for Discovery Communications in 2005 and then moved to Rwanda where she served as the Field Manager for the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project (2006-2009). She returned to the United States to teach at Brown University as Visiting Assistant Professor for a year, and then moved to RISD in 2010.
