Maira Kalman is an illustrator, author, and designer. She has created many covers for The New Yorker, including the famous map of Newyorkistan (created with Rick Meyerowitz). Ms. Kalman's twelve children's books include Max Makes a Million, Stay Up Late, Swami on Rye, and What Pete Ate. She also has designed fabric for Isaac Mizrahi, accessories for Kate Spade, sets for the Mark Morris Dance Company, and, with her late husband Tibor Kalman under the M&Co. label, clocks, umbrellas, and other accessories for the Museum of Modern Art. Ms. Kalman's work is shown at the Julie Saul Gallery in Manhattan.

A beautiful, moving picture book about 9/11, focusing on the role played by a small tugboat. Maira Kalman's text and illustrations work together beautifully to create a lovingly told story suitable for adults and children.

The best book about the September 11th terrorist attacks published for children has been reissued. Nearly scrapped by new York City in 1995, the fireboat John J. Harvey was called in to help put out the fires at the World Trade Center site.

Fireboat gave perhaps one of the best presentations of the events of 9/11 that I've yet seen in a children's book. It was presented carefully, factually, and with enough information to inform kids about the events and the emotions surrounding it, without making them feel frightened or unsafe. I wa...

Near epic tale of the fireboat Harvey from its 'birth' in 1931 to its rebirth in 2001. Factual treatment of the events of 9/11 and the Harvey's part in helping out that day. Text and illustrations work well together. What really caught my eye was the 2 page illustration showing a cloudless blue sky...
