Genre: Japan / Horror / Animals Year Published: 2002 Year Read: 2014 Publisher: Holiday House Now, I will admit that I had actually read the popular Japanese folktale, “The Boy Who Drew Cats” before; my first exposure being to the Rabbit Ears’ version of the folktale which was narrated b...

adapted by Margaret Hodges, illustrated by Aki Sogabe This adaptation is remarkably similar to the original. I'd say the only bonus to reading this version is Sogabe's cut paper illustrations. Also, the book uses the word chink too many times for my liking. The word is present in the original tran...

Joan of Arc is fascinating! Sadly this story kind of makes her seem rather dull and the illustrations are even less exciting. They are done in a kind of faux Medieval style which is nice, but I think they're not a great fit for the material or the intended audience.

2.5 starsI did not really care much for the artwork in this simple outline of the St. Joan of Arc story for kids 5/6 +.

3 stars for artworkI did not really like this one. Artwork was fine, as is any from Trina Schart Hyman, and given the source material I should not have been expecting much, but I quite despise this story - the whole story of Gareth of Orkney. It is not made any better even here and while she edits o...

Hodges is, as usual, clear and a little cool in her rendition of the story. No one seems very upset. This is reflected in the mild, static pastel illustrations. Nary a one conveys energy or action; they remind me of posed photographic scenes. Aphrodite looks like she is striking a Vogue pose whilst ...
