Margarita Mooney is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Faculty Fellow of the Carolina Population Center. She received her Ph.D. and M.A. in Sociology from Princeton University and a B.A. in Psychology from Yale University. Her professional research and teaching interests include immigration, religion, education, culture, and international development. She has received grants and fellowships for her work from a number of universities and institutes, including Princeton University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Columbia University, Baylor University and the Louisville Institute. Her work has been cited in the New York Times Op-Ed page, and the Chronicle of Higher Education has profiled her research two times. Prior to attending graduate school, Professor Mooney worked at the Arias Foundation for Peace and Human Progress in San Jose, Costa Rica. At the Arias Foundation, she wrote speeches for Dr. Oscar Arias, 1987 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and two-time President of Costa Rica. She also worked on projects related to peace and democracy in Central America, such as the re-integration into civilian life of former combatants in the civil wars in El Salvador and Nicaragua. She is fluent in Spanish, French and Haitian Creole.
