Maria Mudd Ruth (1960-)was born in Washington, D.C. and has lived in Maryland, Virginia and worked for National Geographic TRAVELER magazine for several years before becoming a full-time freelance writer in 1990. She has published more than a dozen books on natural history topics including Rare Bird: Pursuing the Mystery of the Marbled Murrelet. The endangered seabird that is the subject of this book lured Maria and her family to the West Coast in 2001. She now lives in Washington State and is writing a book--part natural history, part personal essay--on clouds.
