France’s beleaguered queen, Marie Antoinette, wrongly accused of uttering the infamous “Let them eat cake,” was the subject of ridicule and curiosity even before her death; she has since been the object of debate and speculation and the fascination so often accorded tragic figures in history. Married in mere girlhood, this essentially lighthearted, privileged, but otherwise unremarkable child was thrust into an unparalleled time and place, and was commanded by circumstance to play a significant role in history. Antonia Fraser’s lavish and engaging portrait of Marie Antoinette, one of the most recognizable women in European history, excites compassion and regard for all aspects of her subject, immersing the reader not only in the coming-of-age of a graceful woman, but also in the unraveling of an era. From the Trade Paperback edition.

To moje drugie spojrzenie na Marię Antoninę. Pierwsze to dzieło Stefana Zweiga. Powyższa biografia to niezwykle ciekawe i wnikliwe przedstawienie tej postaci. Zweig koncentruje się bardziej na wewnętrznych przeżyciach bohaterki, Antonia Fraser znacznie rozszerza perspektywę. Polecam

I think it’s safe to say that most people know who Marie Antoinette was. Austrian princess, French queen, beheaded at the guillotine during the French Revolution. Played by Kirsten Dunst in the Sofia Coppola movie, which was based on this book. This biography was everything I was expecting, a clear-h...
I really knew very little about Marie Antoinette - only that which has become part of western cultural knowledge - before listening to this book. I feel much better informed now, and feel a great sense of injustice for the way she was treated. The audiobook treatment suffered for not having the foot...
Of the various biographies that I have about Marie Antoinette, this is the best written of the lot. The research is complete, the sources unusual, and we get to see this doomed French queen as a person, not just as an icon. Very much recommended!
