Dr. Marshall Kirk McKusick writes books and articles, teachesclasses on UNIX- and BSD-related subjects, and providesexpert-witness testimony on software patent, trade secret,and copyright issues particularly those related to operatingsystems and filesystems. He has been a developer and commiterto the FreeBSD Project since its founding in 1993. Whileat the University of California at Berkeley, he implementedthe 4.2BSD fast filesystem and was the Research ComputerScientist at the Berkeley Computer Systems Research Group(CSRG) overseeing the development and release of 4.3BSD and4.4BSD. He earned his undergraduate degree in electricalengineering from Cornell University and did his graduatework at the University of California at Berkeley, where hereceived master's degrees in computer science and businessadministration and a doctoral degree in computer science.He has twice been president of the board of the UsenixAssociation, is currently a member of the FreeBSD FoundationBoard of Directors, a member of the editorial board of ACM'sQueue magazine, a senior member of the IEEE, and a member ofthe Usenix Association, ACM, and AAAS.In his spare time, he enjoys swimming, scuba diving, andwine collecting. The wine is stored in a speciallyconstructed wine cellar (accessible from the Web athttp://www.mckusick.com/~mckusick/) in the basement of thehouse that he shares with Eric Allman, his partner of35-and-some-odd years and husband since 2013.
